GETTING STARTED

  • Children can begin ISR lessons as early as 6 months old, once they can sit independently. ISR lessons are designed for infants, toddlers, and young children up to age 6 (and sometimes older if they’re motivated and comfortable).

  • Most children complete their initial program in 5–7 weeks, depending on their age and development.

  • Lessons are 10 minutes per day, four days a week (Monday–Thursday). Short, consistent lessons help children stay focused and safe while building muscle memory.

  • ISR Kentucky lessons are offered at multiple locations:

    • Shelbyville & Crestwood — with Kristina McCulley

    • Louisville East — with Suann Koralia

Exact pool addresses and directions are provided after enrollment.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

    • Rollback-to-Float (ages 6–12 months): teaches babies to roll onto their backs, float, rest, and breathe until help arrives.

    • Swim-Float-Swim (toddlers & older): teaches children to swim a short distance, roll onto their back to breathe, then continue swimming to safety.

  • Refresher lessons are shorter, 2–4 week sessions for returning ISR students to strengthen and adjust their skills as they grow.

  • ISR focuses on survival before strokes. Each child learns real-life safety skills, not just comfort or play. Lessons are one-on-one, gentle, and fully customized for your child’s pace and readiness.

SAFETY AND HEALTH

  • Yes — safety is the cornerstone of ISR. Each instructor is certified through an 8-week academic and in-water training program and recertified annually. Lessons are individually paced and closely monitored for each child’s comfort and readiness.

  • Two to four weeks before lessons begin, you’ll complete an online medical registration with ISR International. The $105 fee goes directly to ISR and includes a review by their team of pediatric nurses to ensure your child can safely participate.

  • Children should not swim if they have a fever, ear infection, diarrhea, or other illness. Notify your instructor as soon as possible.

DURING LESSONS

  • Absolutely. Parents are encouraged to watch each lesson and celebrate their child’s progress. You’ll also learn valuable water-safety information to reinforce at home.

  • Some children may cry at first — it’s a new environment and skill. However, lessons are gentle, consistent, and always taught with your child’s safety and emotional well-being in mind. Most children quickly gain comfort and confidence within the first week.
